Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the potential of natural building materials, specifically straw and clay,as alternatives to conventional options such as mineral wool and concrete. The study focuses onthermal insulation and energy efficiency, with particular emphasis on U-values. A combinationof literature review and calculations of thermal transmittance forms the methodological basis. The results demonstrate that wood combined with mineral wool achieves the lowest U-values,while straw requires significantly thicker walls to reach comparable levels of energy efficiency.Nevertheless the findings indicate that straw can provide competitive insulation performance inadapted constructions, as exemplified by a straw bale house in Umeå examined in this study. The conclusion is that while straw and clay cannot compete with conventional materials instandard stud wall systems, they hold considerable potential for sustainable construction whendesign flexibility allows for greater wall thickness. The study highlights both the opportunitiesand limitations of natural materials in contributing to energy-efficient and environmentallyresponsible building practices.
