Evaluation of the load-bearing capacity of mortise-and-tenon joints in large prefabricated reinforced concrete elements (English)
Abstract [en]

This master’s thesis investigates the structural performance of mortise-and-tenonjoints in large prefabricated reinforced concrete elements, focusing on load-bearingcapacity and practical feasibility in modular construction. Conducted in collaborationbetween Bouygues Travaux Publics and KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the research adapts historical timber joinery concepts to concrete through advancedprefabrication techniques. The methodology combines global structural analysis with detailed local modeling.A preliminary study identified optimal joint placement within culvert-type assemblies, followed by a comprehensive local analysis incorporating nonlinear contactbehavior governed by the Mohr–Coulomb friction law. Parametric simulationsevaluated the influence of tenon geometry and normal force on mechanical performance. Results reveal that normal force is the most influential factor, with ultimateresisting moment increasing almost linearly with compression, while geometricparameters exhibit optimal ranges beyond which efficiency declines.A global reassessment confirmed that the jointed configuration maintains structuralintegrity while introducing controlled flexibility and improving ductility comparedto monolithic systems. Stress redistribution remained within acceptable limits, andnumerical validation showed negligible joint openings, ensuring reliable waterproofingwithout additional systems. These findings demonstrate that mortise-and-tenonjoints offer significant advantages over conventional wet joints, specifically regardingassembly speed and modularity. While limitations related to scale effects and dynamic loading are acknowledged, this work provides a foundation for full-scale experimental validation and newdesign guidelines. Overall, this research bridges traditional craftsmanship withmodern engineering to promote innovative, safer, and more sustainable constructionpractices.

Abstract [sv]
