In an increasingly globalized and digitalized world, the teaching of Languages for Specific Purposes(LSP) in higher education must adapt to prepare students for complex, multilingual, and multiculturalprofessional contexts. At a technical university, LSP teaching is skill-oriented and closely linked toprofessional communication in engineering and technology-driven sectors. This presentationexamines the design and role of collaborative, task-based and digitally supported formats in LSPcourses and modules within engineering education. While research has often focused on learningoutcomes such as linguistic or intercultural gains, the pedagogical design and curricular integration ofthese courses have received less attention. Drawing on different examples of Collaborative OnlineInternational Learning (COIL) courses and modules at KTH, we analyse how this format shapes studentlearning and what role such courses can play in the engineering curriculum. The comparison highlightsthe added value of LSP through COIL modules to disciplinary teaching, their points of overlap withexisting course structures, and how they contribute to communicative, intercultural and professionalcompetences in engineering education.
