Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund

Abstract [en]

Background

This thesis includes an investigation of dust exposure and the amount of lead in blood for shooting instructors within one region of the Swedish Police Authority. Working in a dusty environment is common and can lead to health problems, one factor in the dust that can be particularly dangerous is the presence of lead. According to Swedish legislation, exposure to dust in the work environment must be regulated based on occupational exposure limit values and may require medical checks. The Swedish Work Environment Authority has decreased the exposure limit level for both lead in inhaled air and in blood in the spring of 2026.

Purpose

The purpose of the study was to provide a basis for a risk assessment within one region of the Swedish Police Authority to determine whether medical checks for lead are required for shooting instructors.

Method

Measurement of the concentration of particles in the air has been carried out at three shooting ranges, where one instructor per shooting range carried the personal measuring equipment. All of the shooting instructors within the region at the time have been offered to submit blood samples for lead.

Results

Overall results from measurement of exposure to airborne particles and reported results of exposure control for lead in blood, are below occupational exposure limits.

Conclusion

The study shows that shooting instructors in Region Mitt at the Swedish Police Authority are not exposed to levels of lead-containing dust that would require medical checks. This is overall consistent with results from other studies.

Identified areas of improvement to ensure a good working environment aims to inform and educate about the risks of lead, ensure hygiene routines and cleaning, ensure good ventilation and use of protective equipment when handling bullet residue.
