Abstract [en]

This study analyses historical U.S. fund data from fixed-income and actively brokered equity funds during economic up- and downturns (proxied by the output gap) in order to compare how these fund types are affected. A random effects panel data model with lagged output gap is utilised, where fund returns are functions of the output gap, market growth and the fund category. The results show that output gap has a negative correlation with fund performance one- and three quarters in advance, with actively brokered funds being more affected than fixed-income funds. The results also establish that fixed-income funds, while being less affected, provide lower returns than actively brokered equity funds. The respective risk of different strategies is not considered.
