How can “science” and “art” coexist, merge, and/or challenge established norms in planning research and practice? Founded on such questions, this chapter explores the intersection of artistic methods and scientific approaches in academic and planning contexts, with a focus on whether art can play a significant role in challenging what has been called “scientism”. The authors discuss how arts-based methods can enrich planning processes by engaging diverse publics, disrupting conventional power structures, and fostering creativity. Through case studies, this conversation examines the potential of art to allow alternative forms of knowledge and understanding to emerge that are often marginalized in scientific discourse.
