Abstract [en]

Crowd accidents and slow evacuations from arenas can be fatal. Therefore, it is crucial to design arenas that facilitate effective evacuations. Modern technology enables the use of computer crowd simulations to simulate evacuations and evaluate the arena layout. This study evaluates and compares two different crowd evacuation simulators; Pathfinder and a model built in NetLogo that uses the A* Algorithm. The two simulators are tested in the particular scenario of simulating and testing arena section layouts and their connection to evacuation times from the arena. The metrics of the layouts that are varied and tested are vomitory width, number of vomitories, and stair width. This study found that the relationship between two of these variables and the evacuation time was similar in both evacuation simulators. The quantitative results of both simulators were found to be of similar usefulness, which could strengthen the argument for using simpler 2D models under certain circumstances, like arena section environments. Pathfinder, as one of the most commonly used evacuation simulators currently, has many features that were not used in this study and could potentially improve its usefulness in other cases.
