Abstract [en]

In telecommunications, wireless devices communicate with base stations via radio frequency signals. A base station contains filters which attenuate undesired frequency bands using resonators. Prior to this project, quality checks on ceramic resonators at Ericsson AB’s Department of Prototyping and Production Technology were performed manually. A small ceramic cylinder was placed in a test resonator, the lid was screwed on, and the signal test performed. As the manual process was slow and repetitive, it was proposed that the process could be automated. The purpose of the project was to optimize the measuring process. The goal was to automate the process by designing a fixture that could be used together with an existing robot arm. The fixture was to press down the lid during the signal testing. After the test, it would lift it off allowing the large robot hand to reach the test resonator and switch out the ceramic under test. The most important requirement was that the fixture should demonstrate at least equal repeatability compared with the manual process. Several conceptual solutions were developed, and the simplest feasible design was chosen for further investigation. The chosen concept, which involved a pneumatic actuator, was designed, produced, and assembled. The pneumatics and robot arm were tested with the fixture to verify compatibility. A wellfunctioning fixture that can generate a force up to 2.3 kN was delivered. A test was performed using the fixture in which the standard deviation of the automatic measurements appeared to be smaller than that of the manual measurements. However, since it was not calibrated and because of the small sample size, no conclusions about the repeatability or accuracy of results can be drawn with certainty. The fixture requires further calibration and testing and MATLAB program with which to coordinate the motions of the robot and fixture
