Abstract [en]

One of today's biggest societal issues is the environment and sustainable energy.Solar cells and electric vehicles of various kinds have and will continue to becomemore common to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. To charge these electricvehicles, charging stations are required, which has also become a requirement formany buildings in recent years. If the charging stations could be supplied withelectricity in the form of solar energy from solar cells, it would result in a moreenvironmentally friendly and sustainable way of operating vehicles. This paper willexamine whether solar cells and solar energy can supply the electricity needs of Mallof Scandinavia and the charging stations in its car park. In addition to this, this paperwill also include how much solar energy can be produced by solar cells as well asdescribing what a solar cell is as well as what a charging station is and how theyfunction on a technical level.During the writing of this paper a study was performed on the frequency of thecharging stations usage through Vattenfall's app InCharge. The results showed thatapproximately 30 charging stations out of the total 58 on average were beingoccupied every hour during the car park's opening hours, which are from 06:00 to24:00 seven days a week. The charging stations were the most busy during thehours between 10:00 to 14:00. It is during this time period that the Mall ofScandinavia has the greatest number of visitors. Therefore the solar cells should bemounted against the sun direction that gives the greatest effect in the middle of theday. As Mall of Scandinavia is exposed to the sun rays from the direction of around150-210 degrees and where 180 degrees is straight from the south during that time, you should mount the solar cells with a slope of 30-40 degrees in a southerlydirection to utilize the solar cells' power to 100%.Finally, it could be concluded that it's not possible to supply an entire mall only withenergy from solar cells due to the large electricity demand. However, it is entirelypossible to implement solar cells and use the solar energy from the solar cells tocover the charging stations' electricity needs at Mall of Scandinavia.
