Abstract [en]
The thesis aims to explore how to enable the sensitive environment of a natural area, and how to make architectural additions in a respectful way to the environment. The project is a balancing act between attracting more people to experience this spectacular landscape, and keeping the nature as preserved and untouched as possible in its pristine state.
The site for the project is in the vicinity of the small Norwegian town Rjukan, located right at the edge of the mountain plateau and natural area of Hardangervidda. The town today struggles with depopulation, especially young adults are moving from the area. The greatest potential for the town and surrounding area lies in its spectacular nature, and the tourism it brings.
For the designs in the project, the traditional Norwegian building technique of log houses has been studied and used. Limitations to the size and design of the cabins have been set with realistic and feasible aspects, in terms of logistics and economy.
The project strives to show how small architectural additions can be utilized to make a sensitive environment of a Natural area more accessible, while also preserving its pristineness.
