Abstract [en]
Stockholm’s metro system dates back to the mid-20th century when the first tunnel is built under Södermalm. This marked an ambitious urban infrastructure project that shape the city’s spatial development and its connection to the suburban area. Among the 100 existing metro stations, 45 stations have squares, of which 36 were developed alongside the station infrastructure. These co-development planning, with the marriage of underground infrastructure with open space, represent a distinct typology in the urban landscape: the metro square.
19 metro squares locates in the suburban areas of Stockholm. These spaces usually sit directly outside metro stations and function as key arrival and departure points, mediating the transition from the dense, fast-paced environment of central Stockholm to the quieter, more localized character of the suburbs. My thesis project is to rethink the typology of suburban metro square. The renewal of the metro squares is not brought by the pressure from a new function and program, but to contribute to the contemporary definition of metro squares. The typology of squares is introduced by the construction of underground transportation in mid 20 century, but the spatial quality and its social and democratic significance to suburb remain underdeveloped. It leads to my design methods of the square renewal: repaving the surface and reinstall the urban furnitures to create a more legible and engaging public realm.
