On the instability phenomenon of lateral torsional buckling (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This report focuses on the instability phenomenon of lateral torsional buckling that affects slender beams with large spans. The purpose of the report is to raise awareness about lateral torsional buckling by describing its process and analysing factors influencing the risk of buckling. The methodology employed to achieve the results included an extensive literature review, force analysis of a beam, and conducting strength calculations. The report presents comprehensive findings that describe the instability phenomenon and its impact on beams. Furthermore, crucial factors increasing the risk of lateral torsional buckling are identified, along with strategies to address them. The conclusions of the report highlight that the buckling process involves multiple stages, and several factors need to be considered when assessing the risk of buckling. The report particularly emphasizes the importance of risk assessment during the construction phase when beams lack lateral supports. Finally, it underscores the need for structural engineers to possess adequate knowledge of the instability phenomenon to ensure secure constructions.
