Evaluation of Exhaust Air Heat Pumps and Solar Panels in combination with District Heating in Multi-Family Buildings (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
This report examines the potential for a housing cooperative to reduce its high heating costsby installing exhaust air heat pumps (EAHP) in combination with the existing district heatingsystem. In recent years, society has been burdened with unsustainably high energy prices.Specifically, the cooperative's district heating provider has increased its prices by 12% overthe past year, amounting to a total increase of 25% since 2021. This price increase hasoccurred without any significant added value for the user. Simultaneously, electricity priceshave risen sharply due to global circumstances and Sweden's reduced electricity productioncapacity following the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. An installation of EAHP is expected to decrease heating demand but increase electricitydemand. To manage the rising electricity demand, a combination with solar panels could be aviable solution. Both solutions adhere to the Kyoto Pyramid principles for energy efficiency.Despite this, it may initially be challenging to discern the efficiency of EAHP with the newweighting factors introduced in BBR 2020, where district heating is assigned a factor of 0.7and electricity a factor of 1.8. These changes favor district heating, while EAHP, despite itsenergy efficiency and reduced heating demand, faces worsened conditions for achieving afavorable primary energy number. A good primary energy number is crucial for qualifying foradvantageous loans, which would facilitate the investment for the cooperative. The study's results indicate that it is possible to install EAHP in a profitable and energy-efficient manner, and that a combination with solar panels is even more profitable. However, the cooperative does not achieve the energy class required to be offered advantageous loans. The investigation into the optimal approach has been conducted with support from experiencein the installation industry and EAHP suppliers. This resulted in an installation that solelycontributes to heating. To further optimize the EAHP, it is worth considering lowering thesupply temperatures to the radiators, which reduces heating demand and yields significantsavings.Installations of this type should be of great interest to the Swedish government if theestablished climate goals are to be met. To facilitate a smooth transition to climate-smartenergy sources, energy efficiency measures must be implemented to reduce the heatingenergy demand of the major energy users in society. A significant savings potential exists inthe country's multi-family residential buildings.
