Background: More and more companies are striving to operate more sustainably. For smaller companies and startups, this is often a challenge due to limited resources and a primary focus on business development and survival. At the same time, early decisions made during product development can greatly influence how sustainably the company can operate in the future.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to develop a practical tool that helps startups identify and prioritize sustainability measures, particularly those related to the end-of-life stage of the product. The goal is to support the integration of circular principles already in early development phases.

Method: The study was conducted using a qualitative approach, with data collected through semi-structured interviews and a survey targeting startups and established companies. Insights from the empirical data were combined with theory on sustainability, circular economy, and product lifecycle – with a special focus on end-of-life – to develop a tool tailored to the needs of startups.

Results: The study shows that many startups have strong ambition to work more sustainably but lack simple tools and guidance to get started. Economic and organizational limitations often make formal certifications or advanced systems unrealistic in the early stages. The developed tool provides concrete support for identifying potential actions and prioritizing efforts based on sustainability impact and feasibility, with focus on reuse, recycling, and resource-efficient product phase-out.

Bakgrund: Allt fler företag strävar efter att arbeta mer hållbart. För mindre företag och startups är detta ofta en utmaning. Det beror på att de har begränsade resurser och fokus ligger på affärsutveckling och överlevnad. Samtidigt kan tidiga beslut i produktutvecklingen få stor betydelse för hur hållbart företaget kan arbeta på sikt.

Syfte: Syftet med studien är att utveckla ett praktiskt verktyg som hjälper startups att identifiera och prioritera hållbarhetsåtgärder, särskilt kopplade till produktens livcykelslut. För att sedan underlätta integrationen av cirkulära principer redan i tidiga utvecklingsfaser.

Metod: Studien är genomförd med en kvalitativ ansats där data samlats in genom semistrukturerade intervjuer och en enkät riktad till startups och etablerade företag. Insikter från empirin har kombinerats med teori inom hållbarhet, cirkulär ekonomi och produktlivscykel med fokus på livcykelslut för att utforma ett verktyg som är anpassat till startups behov.

Resultat: Studien visar att startups har en vilja att arbeta mer hållbart, men saknar enkla verktyg och vägledning för att komma i gång. Ekonomiska och organisatoriska begränsningar gör att formella certifieringar eller avancerade system ofta är orealistiska i tidiga faser. Det framtagna verktyget ger ett konkret stöd för att identifiera möjliga åtgärder och prioritera insatser utifrån hållbarhetseffekt och genomförbarhet, med fokus på återanvändning, återvinning och resurseffektiv avveckling.
