Miljöpåverkan av digitalisering i byggnaders energisystem (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools into buildings has gained attention for its potential to improve energy efficiency and support sustainability goals. However, the environmental impacts of these technologies are not yet fully understood. This thesis investigates the life cycle environmental performance of ICT systems implemented in the energy infrastructure of a building in Norrköping, Sweden. Using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and the Three-Level Model, introduced by Hilty to evaluate the net environmental effects of products, the study evaluates 51 different types of ICT devices across the production, use, and disposal phases.

The analysis covers four impact categories: Global Warming Potential (GWP), Cumulative Energy Demand (CED), Mineral Resource Scarcity (MRS), and Human Carcinogenic Toxicity (HCT). Results show that the production phase contributes most significantly to environmental burdens, especially due to the energy-intensive manufacturing and material use of components such as sensors and actuators. The use phase is also relevant, though its impact is moderated by Sweden’s low-carbon electricity mix. The disposal phase has minimal influence in all categories.

An 8% reduction in the building’s energy consumption was observed following the implementation of the ICT system. Breakeven calculations for two impact categories, Global Warming Potential (GWP) and Mineral Resource Scarcity (MRS), over a 10-year period show that only a 0.9% improvement in energy efficiency is required to offset the GWP impact, and 10% to offset the MRS impact. This threshold was not only met but also substantially exceeded within the first year for GWP, indicating a clear environmental benefit from the system. For MRS, while the offset threshold has not yet been reached, the gap relative to the current energy efficiency is relatively small, suggesting that compensation is likely in the near future.

Overall, the findings suggest that, when implemented in regions with low-carbon energy grids, ICT solutions can deliver meaningful energy savings with manageable environmental costs. However, the importance of considering manufacturing impacts and potential rebound effects underscores the need for holistic sustainability assessments in future digitalization efforts.

Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: IKT-
