Exploring Expressive Underfoot Haptic Experiences Through Collaborative Touch Crafting

Abstract [en]

This study explores expressive haptic design under the foot. While previous research has extensively investigated haptic interactions on the hands and fingertips, prior work on the feet spans gait research, and foot-based interaction, far less is known about how underfoot haptics can be designed or interpreted expressively. In this study, non-tech expert participants took part in design workshops using a tangible toolkit to create and interpret underfoot sensations representing different surfaces and the dynamic pro- cesses associated with emotions. The findings show that participants relied on material qualities, move- ment patterns, and embodied metaphors to shape and express their tactile experiences, using bodily en- gagement as a way of communicating. By capturing these collaborative, metaphor-driven processes, the study highlights how expressive haptic design can go beyond technical precision toward richer, more meaning-oriented forms of sensory communication. The study also shows that craft-based, hands-on approaches encourage creativity and shared understanding, opening new directions for inclusive and human-centered haptic toolkits. By expanding the focus of haptic design to the feet and emphasizing the expressive and participatory aspects of touch, this work provides a foundation for future exploration in interactive media, virtual reality, and embodied interfaces.

Abstract [sv]

Denna studie undersöker expressiv haptisk design under foten.
