Abstract [en]

The study of double-negative metamaterials is a promising research area, as is the transition from regular (double-positive) materials to double-negative metamaterials (LHM). This project aims to numerically validate expressions that describe an impedance-matched transition between a right-handed medium and a left-handed medium with minimal reflections, using realistic unit cells based on square split-ring resonators.

The project used COMSOL Multiphysics to design and simulate the building blocks of the composite, the composite itself, and the transition. Within a narrow frequency range, when the structure is excited with a plane wave, the unit cell of a left-handed medium is shown to have a negative permittivity and permeability. The permeability and permittivity over frequency are calculated iteratively using a material parameter retrieval method based on extracting the S-parameters of the simulated structure. The final composite design has a resonance at about 2.8 GHz. The permeability is equal to -1 at around 2.94 GHz. For that frequency, the permittivity of the composite is equal to about -1.26. These are the parameter values used to create an RHM that is impedance-matched to the LHM composite.

The COMSOL simulations of the composite show a plane wave entering the composite in the +z direction, moving through the composite in the -z direction, and exiting the composite in the +z direction. Hence, the project successfully simulated a backward propagating wave. Simulations of a stepped transition also showed the plane wave traveling in opposite directions in the different materials.
