Abstract [en]

As we transition into a greener world the demand for electricity has increased and will continue to do so. This means that more grid infrastructure will have to be built. This infrastructure is usually fitted with Partial Discharge (PD) measurement equipment. It is critical that this equipment is tightly and consistently synchronized to the phase of the grid voltage so that the pattern of partial discharges relative to instantaneous voltage magnitude can be mapped and tracked over time. This is so that the health of the equipment can be tracked and timely maintenance or replacement can be done before any catastrophic failures occur.

This masters thesis focuses on the development of a grid synchronization front end for partial discharge measurements. The system has several galvanically isolated input channels for different synchronization sources and features a large input range from 1 V to 230 V with less than one degree of phase shift in the measurement band of 10 Hz to 300 Hz.

Testing of the system showed that the system can pinpoint zero crossings with an error down to less than 20 microseconds, with a high robustness to electromagnetic interference, input noise and over-voltage transients thanks to the filter design incorporating protective components.
