Abstract [en]

The medical ventilators developed and produced by Getinge in Solna, Sweden are used to administer air and oxygen to patients. To control the amount of gas administered, a component called the gas-module is used that controls the flow of gas released by the ventilator in a closed-loop feedback system. In order to do this, the flow passing through the gas-module is measured using a method called Differential Pressure Flow Measurement (DPFM).

The DPFM used in the gas-module is based on the principle that the pressure drop created when gas flows through a porous material is related to the flow rate. In Getinge’s gas-module, the pressure drop is created by placing a filter made of fine steel wool in a gas channel, called a ∆P-filter in this report. A concept (binary classifier) for evaluating the properties of such ∆P-filters would allow Getinge to predict the performance of the ∆P-filter before it is assembled inside a gas-module. This would help Getinge to improve the quality of the gas-modules and to increase production yield.

A metric to quantify flow resistance for flow through porous materials is designed and validated. The results show that the flow resistance of the ∆P-filter is clearly correlated with the performance of the gas-module. A random forest is also trained and evaluated, which can also predict the performance of the gas-module with high accuracy.
