Creation of a platform for medical device development : A study to create a platform to facilitate product development of medical devices (English)
Abstract [sv]

medicinteknisk produktutveckling.

Abstract [en]

In medical device development, regulatory requirements and international standards are

utilized to ensure that the end product is safe and of high quality. The development process

often undergoes a long and rigorous validation procedure to guarantee that the application

meets the established requirements. This process is highly time-consuming and

resource-intensive for the developer. Thus, there is a significant need for development

methods that can facilitate medical device development.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop and evaluate a platform designed to simplify medical

device development by automating parts of the development process. The platform is

intended to serve as a foundation for medical device applications, thereby easing the

resource-intensive validation process. It consists of the event-driven framework QP/C

combined with the graphical modeling tool QM, executing on a RISC-V-based

microcontroller.

The work includes a functional simulation of a medical device application as a practical proof

of concept and as an argument for the platform’s characteristics and facilitating features. QM

was used to graphically design hierarchical state machines and automatically generate

functional source code.

The study demonstrates that a functional platform, capable of facilitating the development of

medical devices, has been established. Through its complementary documentation of

functional requirements and methods, QP/C contributes to efficient standardization work.

Furthermore, the utilization of active objects eliminated the need for shared resources,

highlighting an alternative solution for resource management. In conclusion, the study shows

that a platform with automated processes has been developed and can successfully be applied

within safety-critical areas, such as medical device development.
