Anomal Hall-effekt i planet hos tunna vismutfilmer (Swedish)
Abstract [en]
The intrinsic anomalous Hall response of Bi(111) thin films under an in-plane uniform magnetic field was investigated computationally, and molecular beam epitaxy growth and structural characterization of Bi thin films was conducted with the future goal of performing experimental measurements of this effect. A multiorbital sp3 tight-binding model of a 16-bilayer Bi(111) slab was constructed including surface-state effects, and an in-plane magnetic field introduced through Peierls orbital, spin-Zeeman, and orbital-Zeeman couplings. The resulting Berry curvature and anomalous Hall conductivity was then calculated. For a magnetic field along the bisectrix direction, a finite intrinsic Hall response was obtained and found to be dominated by the Peierls orbital coupling. The largest-Berry curvature contributions originate from pairs of bands near the Fermi level with substantial surface localization. The Hall sheet conductance near the Fermi level was calculated to be in the order of 0.3-0.4 e2/h.In parallel, Bi thin films were grown on Al2O3(0001) using molecular beam epitaxy and characterized using RHEED and X-ray diffraction techniques. The films were predominantly Bi(111)-oriented, but showed 60 deg rotated domains in the plane, which are expected to suppress the in-plane Hall effect by cancellation. The most promising results were obtained for growth at approximately room temperature followed by post annealing at 260 C, close to the melting point of Bi.
The results demonstrate that an intrinsic in-plane anomalous Hall response is allowed by symmetry and can arise from the electronic structure of Bi(111) thin films, but improved control of in-plane domain formation is necessary for future experimental investigation.
