Occurrence of Acrylamide in Norrvatten’s ResidualStreams from the Sludge Dewatering Processunder Different Operating Configurations (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Norrvatten is a municipal association that produces and distributes drinking water to 14member municipalities in northern Stockholm. Production takes place at Görväln WaterTreatment Plant (WTP) in the municipality of Järfälla, and raw water is sourced from LakeMälaren. During drinking water treatment, sludge is produced and subsequently treated in asludge dewatering process. To improve the separation of water from sludge, polyacrylamide isused, which may contain a certain amount of residual acrylamide monomer.

In previous investigations at the Görväln WTP, elevated acrylamide concentrations weredetected in the clarified water (overflow) from the lamella separators. The results also indicatedthat a separated configuration resulted in lower acrylamide concentrations in the overflow thana combined configuration. Furthermore, varying acrylamide concentrations were observed inreject water (centrate) from the centrifuges after sedimentation.

The aim of this thesis was therefore to investigate the occurrence of acrylamide in the tworesidual streams, centrate and overflow, generated during the sludge dewatering process underdifferent operating configurations, in order to provide a basis for future configuration decisionsat the Görväln WTP. If acrylamide concentrations above the internal limit of 0,1 μg/L weredetected, the underlying factors were to be investigated. The study also aimed to examine howsedimentation affects acrylamide concentrations in centrate.

The results showed that many overflow and centrate samples exceeded the internal limit value.Furthermore, acrylamide concentrations in the two residual streams exhibited opposite trendsbetween the operating configurations. During the separated configuration, the largestdischarge of acrylamide to Lake Mälaren occurred via the centrate stream, whereas during thecombined configuration, the discharge occurred primarily via the overflow stream. Based onthe mass flow calculations, the acrylamide discharge to Lake Mälaren was estimated to be 2,1times higher during the combined configuration than during the separated configuration. Therefore, a separated configuration with an additional treatment step for the centrate streamis recommended. This recommendation is motivated by the fact that the centrate stream isapproximately ten times smaller than the overflow stream, resulting in a lower treatmentcapacity requirement than would be needed for treatment of the overflow stream.

The elevated acrylamide concentrations are most likely due to the high doses of polyacrylamideadded in the sludge dewatering process. Results from sedimented centrate samples showed thatthe acrylamide concentration increased from approximately <0,05 to concentrations between6 and 26 μg/L.
