Abstract [en]

Spiling is a pre-support method in tunnelling through weak and highly fractured rock masses, whose design is still largely based on conservative, project specific, engineering judgement. This thesis investigates the relationship between the minimum block size that can be supported by pipe spiles based on the spile spacing, and how this is influenced by the friction angle at the spile to rock mass interface. A physical model of a tunnel roof in scale 1:5 was made to observe in which cases progressive failure is initiated by sudden removal of material underneath the umbrella arch. The custom steel box has dimensions 0.7 x 0.7 x 0.6 m and is equipped with plexiglas viewing windows and removable base plate. Block size, spile spacing, and interface were systematically varied using makadam mixes of four different gradations, three spile spacings, and two interfaces to represent different friction angles. As expected, stability decreases with smaller block sizes to higher spilespacing. The critical ratio where the system becomes unstable was identified at a spile spacing to block size ratio of approximately 3, which corresponds to current empirical rules of thumb used in industry. Increasing the interface friction angle shifted the stability boundary higher. The most limiting aspect of this model is using highly fractured makadam to model highly jointed rock mass, since grain shape and makadam porosity decrease arch stability.
