Numerical Modeling of Penetration into Granite : An Exploratory Study of Material Modeling and Computational Challenges (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

During the Cold War, Sweden built extensive underground facilities in hardcrystalline rock, often in granite, many of which remain relevant today. Theemergence of modern earth-penetrating weapons has renewed interest in thepenetration resistance of granite. As an exploratory study, this thesis aims tobroaden the understanding of how penetration in granite can be modelled, inparticular the material behaviour under the high pressures and high strain ratesthat characterise this loading case. The work develops a two-dimensional axisymmetric numerical model in LSDYNA, using the RHT constitutive model, to reproduce rigid-body penetrationof intact granite in the range 400–1200 m/s. The model is compared againstsmall-scale penetration experiments performed at FOI.The model reproduces the penetration depth in intact granite. Penetration depthincreases linearly with impact velocity, but the simulations consistently overestimate Lundberg’s measurements. Given the natural scatter in granite, theagreement is nonetheless deemed acceptable. The model also reproduces thepenetration tunnel and crushed zone consistent with the experimental observations. Radial tensile cracks form in the simulations as well, but the experimentsreport no corresponding data against which these can be compared. The Lagrangian formulation with erosion works for engineering purposes, buterosion is physically incorrect, element-size dependent, and significantly affects penetration depth. The RHT model reproduces depth reasonably well, butdetermining the material parameters entails considerable uncertainty, particularly the residual strength. The model suits qualitative comparisons, but statements about physical magnitudes require both the numerical methodology andmaterial modelling to be clarified further.
