Abstract [en]

The building sector in Europe is the largest contributor to energy consumption. A significant share of energy demand is used by ventilation systems, which require energy for fan operation, airflow conditioning, and heating and cooling of the supplied air, thereby influencing overall energy consumption. Office buildings with high energy demand have strict requirements for indoor air quality and the environment for occupants. Because of these demands, various chilled beam ventilation strategies, such as constant air volume (CAV), variable air volume (VAV), and demand-controlled ventilation (DCV), have been investigated under varying indoor conditions.

This study aims to evaluate the airflow patterns, energy consumption, and economic performance of the airflow control strategies in chilled beam ventilation systems. The methodology combines simulations from IDA ICE to present annual energy consumption and airflow patterns, and the cost evaluation focuses on the initial and additional investment costs associated with the differences in the ventilation systems, while excluding components shared by the systems.

The main findings of the model are that, during operating hours and under varying outdoor temperatures, the airflow pattern of the CAV system remained constant. In contrast, the supply airflow rate varies when VAV and DCV systems are implemented. Zone conditions, such as floor area and occupancy level influence annual energy consumption. The CAV system presents the highest annual energy consumption across all evaluated zones, while the variable ventilation control strategies VAV and DCV demonstrate highly similar total energy consumption and conservation.

The economic evaluation highlights that the DCV system demonstrates a more economical, practical alternative to VAV and CAV systems when the annual energy consumption, energy conservation, and payback period are considered. Finally, the study identifies that the economic feasibility of airflow-controlled chilled beam ventilation systems does not necessarily correspond to the annual energy consumption.
