Abstract [en]

The aim of this project is to study the Serengeti Broadband Network (SBN) in northern Tanzania from different aspects. One of the major challenges in sustaining the network is the power supply. As part of this thesis, a key component in the network, the Linux/Bifrost-based PC router, was updated to a new version, configured and installed at one of the network nodes, the most rural, in Nata, a village in the Serengeti district. The replaced router was moved to the main node of the SBN, in Bunda. The analysis of the network and its components includes router data, power measurements taken from the charge controllers, and data from the solar panels and from an anemometer installed at the Bunda node. The purpose of the measurements was to study the effectiveness of the solar panel and the battery, as well as the potential for installing a wind turbine as an alternative source of power. In addition, traffic measurements were taken from the routers to understand the demand from the local communities. To collect the necessary data, bash scripts were written and installed on the routers in Nata and Bunda. These scripts collected, filtered, processed and graphed power measurements from the charge controller, solar metre, anemometer, Intelligent Platform Management Interface statistics, and digital optical monitoring parameters from the fibre interfaces and traffic statistics in terms of network services used. This project was conducted from April to December 2012. The final report was submitted in January 2013.
