The Swedish Agency for Accessible Media, MTM, is a government agency thatprovides people with reading difficulties with literature in accessible formats suchas Braille and talking books. MTM uses speech synthesis to a large extent, mainlyfor producing talking newspapers and university textbooks.This paper provides a historical account of how speech synthesis has been usedand evaluated at MTM during the last decade, and discusses how MTM can developmore refined evaluation methods to ensure end users’ best interests.
