Abstract [en]

The population has increased significantly in Stockholm, which leads to a great need for more housing, jobs, schools and nursery schools. At the same time, there is a development where smaller city centers become more difficult to be hired as a result of changed purchasing patterns. With increased immigration to Stockholm's suburbs, the number of children also increases.

Järfälla is a municipality located in Stockholm County, Järfälla municipality is growing as the population increased by 1896 people in 2021. The reason for this increase is that many people move into Järfälla municipality in comparison with those who move out. In addition, more children are born in comparison with the people who die. Of course, the more the number of inhabitants increases, the more nursery schools are needed. The number of nursery schools should therefore increase through new construction or rebuilding of premises that are empty, where the business has moved, or premises that can be used in a better way. Demolishing of old buildings for a new construction is not sustainable.

There are two buildings located in Jakobsberg’s area which is part of Järfälla municipality. These buildings are close to each other, it is only 550 meters between them, and the ground floor is used in the exact same way in the two premises. At present, these activities do not appear to be fully operational, if the current businesses close or move, the entrance floor could advantageously be converted into a nursery school.

This degree project within the bachelor program in construction engineering and design at the Royal Institute of technology and design at KTH in Stockholm and has been implemented for ten weeks at the company Sweco in Stockholm. The purpose of this work is to examines whether it is possible to convert unused business premises into nursery schools. This is done with the help of designed proposals. When it comes to designing, the emphasis should focus on acoustics, accessibility, parking spaces, daylight, and garden. The project is based on the difficulties and complications that the rebuilding involves and will show if the project could be achievable. The conclusion of this work is to show that unused business premises in the entrance floors of residential buildings can with advantage be nursery schools.
