Abstract [en]
E-scooter crashes have increased significantly after the rise in popularity of e-scooters, especially with the emergence of the rental scooters. Head and facial injuries are the most common injuries associated with e-scooter crashes. Video analysis techniques can be useful for gaining a more comprehensive understanding of the kinematics related to these crashes and for evaluating the risk of head injuries such as concussions. This thesis focuses on estimating the velocity and pose of e-scooter riders involved in ten crash cases. For two of these cases, the estimated pose and kinematics were utilized in a finite element (FE) simulation to assess if the methodology used in this thesis can be used for accident reconstruction by comparing the 3D pose of the human model representing the e-scooter rider. Two primary approaches were used for velocity estimation: perspective transformation for 3D velocity and homography transformation for 2D velocity estimation from a top-view perspective. For this purpose, both manual and automated object detection and tracking were employed. Both methods were validated using a video segment containing a vehicle with a known velocity. The mean error for manual and automated method was 17.21% and 18.25% respectively. The difference between the two methods in each frame was not statistically significant. For pose estimation, manual annotation was performed for the e-scooter rider body’s keypoints in the frame at the time of the crash, which was then used as input to a pre-trained deep learning model for pose prediction. The mean velocity of the e-scooter rider at the moment of the crash was estimated to be 5.89 m/s, based on CCTV and mobile camera footage. The mean velocity from CCTV footage was 4.84 m/s, which is consistent with values reported in prior studies. However, the mean velocity from mobile cameras was at a higher 8.32 m/s. Finite element simulation was conducted for two crash cases captured by CCTV footage, revealing significant deviations between the poses of the FE human model and pre-trained pose predicting model in the frame of the after math of the crash. Further research is needed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the velocity and pose extraction process as well as the transformation of the obtained kinematic data from the cameras coordinate system into the local coordinates system of the crash reconstruction environment.
