Abstract [en]

Flytbodarna is a puzzle system for prefabricated modular units of housing. They can be arranged and adapted to different sites and needs while offering a characteristic architectural expression. The system provides a series of modules containing different functions, out of which one can compose an arrangement corresponding to ones requirements, site limitations and budget. Flytbodarna is designed to be cost-efficient, flexible and sustainable housing solution, maximizing livable area in relation to footprint.

Thesis question: How could a prefabricated house be designed as a modular puzzle system in order to enable flexibility and adaptation to different sites and needs?

Delimitations: The building should follow a Swedish building code, be transportable in the Swedish road system, it should be economical efficient for the costumer, the building should be composed of accessible locally sourced materials, prefabrication + limited work on site, it should be easily assembled, and lastly; a 450 c/c grid for the plan and facade.

Program: The modules can be arranged into: permanent residence, temporary residence, sauna, tea house, yoga studio / gym, conservatory, greenhouse, atelier / office, storage, etc.

Our findings - Advantages of our puzzle system:

- We have developed a greater variation and flexibility in plan than the typical catalog house in the market, this contributes to the possibility of creating more site-specific solutions.

- We have designed 3D volymes, which guarantees faster building process and higher precision, in contrast to standard flat-pack catalog houses

- The small width of our modules provides generous daylight inside.

- The structure can be placed directly on plinth, minimizing costs, time and imprint on the landscape while providing higher flexibility for height differences.
