Abstract [en]
We have designed a Marine Research Center, for restoration and rehabilitation of coral reefs. The project is located in Indonesia, in a salt water lagoon of the island Pulau Belang. A rich forest of mangrove trees surrounds the site and provides protection from big waves and strong winds. Our Marine Research Center stands on teak poles in the south west part of the lagoon, the Research Center is designed in a circular shape. One has access to the water all round the building via the floating deck but also via the inner center where divers and volunteers work with growing corals, planting corals, etc. The symmetrical building is constructed with a generous roof to provide shadow in the tropical, sunny climate where shadow is vital. A total of 72 load bearing arches in bamboo stand together as the main structure of our project, working together as a frame for the Diving Center we have designed for divers and marine biologists working with coral restoration and plantation to preserve marine ecosystems.
