Abstract [en]

This project proposes the development of new rowhouses as extensions of existing ones, situated on two currently undeveloped properties at the end of Ålstensgatan. The design acknowledges the site’s historical and cultural significance, while integrating a modern perspective, and has a primary focus on ecological sustainability. The project prioritizes minimal environmental impact by utilizing natural, recycled, and raw materials, aiming to promote biodiversity and to harmonize with the landscape and forested surroundings, set to become nature reserves in 2025.

Featuring 10 new rowhouse units, the project follows the angles and orientations of the existing rowhouses. Inspired by Ålsten’s garden city concept, the design facilitates seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. The key design element is the brick walls, which extend through the first floor and into the gardens, providing a strong base for the lighter timber structure on the second floor.

In addition to the rowhouses, the project proposes new park spaces at the road's end, incorporating activities, pergolas, bike parking, and seating. A car road is also transformed into a pedestrian and bike lane, enhancing community connectivity and sustainability. Furthermore, the design demonstrates strategies that prioritize ecological sustainability, contributing to the discussion on sustainable urban development.
