Abstract [en]
Ever since the advent of industrialism, northern Sweden has been characterised by the expansion and decline of industries. From sawmills and hydropower to the extraction of iron ore, communities have been built up and grown around the industrial interests.Today, climatic changes call for new types of industries which have turned northern Sweden into a major development area where new industries are being established and old industries are being transformed. In this context, municipalities are facing several challenges. One of the major ones is the expected large demographic shift, with an estimated 100,000 people moving to the north in the next 15 years.Additionally, there is a large group of people, temporarily moving to the north to participate in the construction of the industries. This thesis focuses on the housing of these temporary residents, so-called posted workers, who come to work within the construction industry. The project is focused on the city of Luleå; a city situated right at the junction of all the developments, and the regional city of Norrbotten. In the coming years, Luleå is expecting a large influx of temporary residents due to several large scale industrial developments. How to accommodate this large group of people?
