Abstract [en]

Safety is a major aspect of the development of cities all over the world. It is a prerequisite for reduced stress and the creation of opportunities for recovery. Humans are led to believe that our cities are gender-neutral. Although men are more often crime victims in public spaces than women, women declare being more fearful than men in these environments. Being older may protect women from sexual harassment, but not if they identify themselves and express themselves as transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals. Drawing upon concepts of unequal victimisation, fear, precaution, and recovery, this chapter highlights possible scenarios for the cities of tomorrow considering the emergent need for making public spaces safe for everyone.
