Abstract [en]

In my thesis, I delved into the challenge of addressing the needs of Árneshreppur by harnessing the abundant resources of the land. Embracing the rich material culture of the region—driftwood, stone, turf, and concrete—I sought to weave a narrative that honors both the storied past and vibrant present of Árneshreppur. This approach transcends mere construction; it is storytelling through architecture, crafting spaces that resonate with the very essence of the community.

By marrying leisure with infrastructure, my design aims to foster a profound sense of belonging and connection among the residents of Árneshreppur. At the heart of this vision stands the binary geothermal power plant—an innovative solution that not only addresses the community’s energy needs but also serves as a catalyst for growth and progress.

This multifaceted structure transcends its industrial function, emerging as a symbol of collective ambition and resilience. As the gentle hum of turbines merges with the laughter of bathers, the power plant evolves into a hub of communal activity and interaction. It becomes a place where locals gather to unwind and where visitors marvel at the harmonious coexistence of tradition and innovation.

Moreover, the integration of a bathhouse within the power plant complex adds a layer of inclusivity and accessibility. Here, barriers dissolve amidst steam and heat, and friendships form. It is a space where conversations flow as freely as the warm waters, forging bonds that extend far beyond the confines of concrete and steel. Through thoughtful design and the strategic use of local resources, we can shape not just our physical environment but the very fabric of our society.

My thesis seeks to build bridges between the people, culture, and nature of Árneshreppur by creating an infrastructural object that doubles as a place of leisure. This new landscape transcends the binary discourse of culture versus nature, offering a lifeline to this small, resilient community, ensuring its survival and preventing it from fading into obscurity.

With the integration of a binary geothermal power plant and a communal bathhouse, I envision a harmonious blend of innovation and tradition. This space not only meets the practical needs of the residents but also honors the deep cultural significance of communal gathering and bathing. In doing so, we breathe new life into Árneshreppur, preserving its essence while paving the way for a sustainable future.
