AI imagery technologies (AI technologies for image-making) have rapidly advanced in generating content from language input, achieving big commercial growth. Being primarily developed in a western context and therefore risking the exclusion of non-dominant cultures, these technologies can impact both individuals and society. By including a range of cultural viewpoints, AI can avoid reinforcing dominant aesthetics and contribute to a more inclusive representation. This project incorporates cultural viewpoints from Taiwan through the Cultural Commentator Method. To answer RQ1: What are the cultural commentators’ experiences and perspectives on AI imagery technologies? and RQ2: How can cultural commentary contribute in the design of AI imagery technologies?, 26 images from 7 participants were examined. Six cultural commentators were then invited to semi-structured workshops discussing AI imagery technologies. Their insights are presented both sui generis and with an interpretation statement. Thematic analysis identified three key themes: (1) Challenges of AI in Accurately Depicting Cultural and Ethnic Representations; (2) Perspectives on Human-AI Distinction in Artistic Creation, Expression and Authenticity; (3) Experiencing Need for Adapting the Language and Negotiating AI Constraints. This study reveals that the cultural commentators expressed concerns about AI’s inability to accurately represent local identities, highlighting instances where AI-generated images often depicted individuals with generic features, underlining the need for culturally nuanced design in AI imagery technologies. The study describes how perspectives from other cultural contexts can enhance inclusiveness in AI imagery technology design, and suggests future work with diverse commentators and combining the Cultural Commentary Method with traditional user research to contribute to the 4th wave of HCI methods.

AI-bildteknologier (AI-teknik för bildskapande) har avancerat i att skapa innehåll från språkinput och nått stor kommersiell tillväxt. Då dessa teknologier främst utvecklats i ett västerländskt sammanhang och därmed riskerar att utesluta underrepresenterade kulturer, kan de påverka både individer och samhälle. Inkludering av kulturella synvinklar kan minska risken att AI underbygger en dominerande estetik samt kan bidra till en mer inkluderande representation. Detta projekt tar med kulturella synvinklar från Taiwan genom Cultural Commentator Method. För att besvara RQ1: Vad är de kulturella kommentatorernas erfarenhet och perspektiv på AI-bildteknologier? och RQ2: Hur kan kulturell kommentering bidra till utformningen av AI-bildteknologier?, studerades 26 AI-genererade bilder från 7 deltagare. Sex kulturkommentatorer bjöds sedan in till semistrukturerade workshops för att diskutera AI-tekniken. Deras insikter presenteras både sui generis och med en tolkningsförklaring. Tematisk analys identifierade tre teman: (1) Utmaningar med AI i att korrekt skildra kulturella och etniska representationer; (2) Perspektiv på distinktionen mellan människa och AI i konstnärligt skapande, uttryck och autenticitet; (3) Upplevt behov av att anpassa språket och förhålla sig till AI-begränsningar. Studien visar att de kulturella kommentatorerna uttryckte oro över AI:s oförmåga att på ett rättvisande sätt representera identiteter och belyser fall där AI-bilder ofta avbildar individer med generiska drag, vilket understryker behovet av kulturellt nyanserad design i AI-bildteknik. Studien beskriver hur perspektiv från andra kulturella kontexter kan öka inkluderingen i AI-bildtekniksdesign och föreslår framtida forskning med olika slags kommentatorer samt att utforska kombinationer av Cultural Commentary Method med traditionell användarforskning och på så vis bidra till den fjärde vågens HCI-metoder.
