Some believe the Hanging Gardensof Babylon were artificial mountains,appearing like lush, hanging gardens froma distance. Others think they were steppedterraces built around a palace. Was one ofthe wonders of the ancient world a myth orreality—a building or a landscape?Stockholm faces a growing housing need.But since urban sprawl is unsustainable,we must accommodate more people onless land—in short, we need to densify.However, in doing so, we often buildover flat, accessible green spaces. Theseareas are essential for public well-being,especially for children, who need space tomove and nature to be in. To address this,we must look beyond building over theseflat green areas and parks, and insteadturn our focus to underused or previouslyoverlooked plots that help create agreener city, not a greyer one.At the same time, our relationship withhousing is changing. People are spendingmore time at home, which has fueled agrowing desire for detached houses withgardens—a way of living that uses themost land, accommodates the fewestpeople, while becoming increasinglyunaffordable for most.This tension—between the desire forspacious, garden-like homes and the needto densify demands alternative solutions.We believe one key typology is beingoverlooked, particularly in Sweden:namely, the stepped terraced house.It offers a middle ground—combiningdensity with some benefits of singlefamilyhomes, where the terrace extendsthe home similar to a garden. And thistypology is in many cases well suited forplots we have previously disregarded. Forthis reason, this project is an investigationinto the stepped terraced house and itspotential in Stockholm today.
