Moderna Museet has a large collection of world class art although only some of it can be shown at a time. It is located on the island of Skeppsholmen in the center of Stockholm. This project investigates the possibility of extending the exhibition space of the museum while at the same time taking advantage of its unique location on the island and in the city. The island is already a cultural center with several museums, art school, agencies and restaurants. The extension of museum exhibition space will be achieved by repurposing the tunnels running underneath the museums but also building a new rotunda, that with a double helix sloping ramp system, leads the visitor along the wall to exhibit more art. At the top of the pathway in the rotunda, the visitors are led, on a bridge, across the space to walk down the ramp on the opposite side, hence experiencing another sequence of art. The double helix enables visitors to walk a path without the need to experience the same art twice. The project also investigates the possibility of connecting the different cultural functions and institutions in ways that makes the island an even more interesting cultural hub.
