Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Microplastics (MPs), which are small plastic pieces ranging in size from 1 μm to <5 mm in diameter, are gradually becoming a serious environmental problem due to two worrying factors: Firstly, approximately 420 million tons of plastic are produced globally every year, with only 9% recycled, leaving the majority of waste to accumulate in the environment. Secondly, global warming and extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, accelerate the aging process of plastics, thereby shortening the expected service life of plastic products. The microplastics generated will eventually transfer into water systems and be directly ingested by marine life. To date, there have been somereports indicating the possible negative impact of global warming and heatwaves on plastic; however, there is no systematic and quantitative research on this topic. This entire project focuses on how temperature increases influence the aging of the plastic materials and the subsequent formation of microplastics. To fully explore what rising temperatures mean for plastic materials, three different plastics were subjected to a fast-ageing experiment with the same UV irradiance and different temperatures (35, 40, 45, 50, and 60 °C). Changes of several relevant properties, including mechanical properties, melting temperature, carbonyl index (CI), formation of microplastics (MPs), etc., were tested. The results indicated a significant acceleration effect of the ageing process, increased by 13%, 16%, and 8% for LDPE, PP, and PET, compared with the pre-industrial level. Additionally, other influences, including oxidation and surface morphology during the ageing process, were also discussed in this article.
