Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are a family of short-chain carboxylic compounds with a wide range of applications in a variety of industries. VFAs are intermediate products in the anaerobic digestion of organic substrates, and anaerobic fermentation processes have been widely studied as a bio-based alternative for VFA production. Furthermore, the concepts of resource recovery and waste management have been integrated into these processes through the use of various organic wastes as substrates. Pulp and paper sludge (PPS) is one of the many candidates to be integrated into these processes. The high volumes of waste generated from the 417-million-tonne-a-year paper production industry have been traditionally incinerated, and the paradigm shift brought by the concept of resource recovery calls for a more efficient and environmentally responsible management of paper mill waste. This project aimed to design a VFA bioproduction process in 7-liter continuously stirred tank bioreactors by co-fermenting PPS with food waste, in order to determine the viability of PPS as a candidate substrate for this kind of process. The robustness of the total VFA production and VFA profiles was studied, the effect of parameters like pH and organic loading rate (OLR) was observed, and the alkaline pre-treatment of the PPS was integrated into the process to test its performance. The pH-controlled reactor showed very low production (peak yield of 0.026 g VFA/g VS) and a very high substrate solubilisation (peak of 39.22 g sCOD/L) at pH 10, while the yield peaked at pH 8 (0.15 g VFA/g VS) with low substrate solubilisation (mostly ranging between 10-13 g sCOD/L). The controlled pH range (8-10) showed a predominance of acetic acid (61-63% at pH 8 and pH 10), followed by propionic acid (18% at pH 8 and pH 10), with a different profile at pH 9 (45% acetic, 18% isovaleric, 13% propionic). To overcome the yield-solubilisation trade-off, a reactor with no pH control and alkaline pre-treated PPS was set up, with a considerably better yield (peaked at 0.318 g VFA/g VS) and a variable VFA profile. Although the yields obtained were relatively low, the operational flaws of the process are identified to discuss improvements for future research aiming to optimise the operational parameters of PPS-based VFA bioproduction.
