I stadsdelen Vårby, sydväst om Stockholms innerstad, finns en rik mångfald i både natur och kultur. Parallellt finns utmaningar med otrygghet, begränsade mötesplatser och brist på tillgängliga kulturarenor.  Särskilt unga och kvinnor saknar rum för gemenskap och aktivitet i det offentliga rummet. Samtidigt står den tidigare Vårbackaskolan tom sedan 2022, en byggnad som bär på potential att omvandlas till en central resurs för stadsdelen.Projektet föreslår en transformation av skolan till Vårby medborgarhus. Här samlas kulturskola, föreningslokaler, ett satellit-servicekontor, community kitchen med restaurang samt en klätterhall. Tillsammans skapar dessa funktioner en plats för rörelse, kultur och demokrati i vardagen.Gestaltningen tar avstamp i områdets befintliga karaktär. Den gula tegelfasaden bevaras i dialog med Vårby gårds arkitektur medan tak, fönstersättning och fasadliv utvecklas för att skapas nya kvaliteter som stärker både identitet och funktionalitet.Projektets syfte är att erbjuda en meningsfull fritid, stärka social sammanhållning och tillgängliggöra kultur och medborgarservice. Vårby medborgarhus blir därmed en ny gemensam plattform för stadsdelen där kultur och rörelse integreras med lokala behov och framtida utveckling.

In the district of Vårby, southwest of central Stockholm, there is a rich diversity of both nature and culture. At the same time, the area faces challenges such as a perceived lack of safety, few public meeting places and limited access to cultural facilities. Young people and women in particular lack safe environments for social interaction and activity. Since 2022 the former Vårbackaskolan has stood vacant, a building with the potential to become a central resource for the community.The project proposes its transformation into Vårby medborgarhus (Vårby Civic House). The program gathers Kulturskolan, association spaces, a satellite service office, a community kitchen with restaurant and a climbing hall. Together, these functions create a civic hub for movement, culture and democracy in everyday life.The design builds on the existing character of the area. The yellow brick facade is preserved in dialogue with the architecture of Vårby Gård, while the roof, windows, and facade composition are reconfigured to introduce new qualities that reinforce both identity and function.The project aims to provide meaningful leisure opportunities, strengthen social cohesion, and improve access to culture and civic services. Vårby Civic House thereby becomes a shared platform for the district, where culture and movement are integrated with local needs and future development.
