Abstract [en]
This thesis investigates the fatigue behavior of two stainless steels commonly used in nuclearengineering applications: additively manufactured 316L (AM 316L) and conventionallymanufactured 304L. The study combines experimental testing with numerical modeling to enhancethe understanding of fatigue mechanisms and to develop predictive models. For AM 316L, the influence of post-processing techniques, solution annealing (SA), hot isostaticpressing (HIP), and machining, was systematically evaluated on fatigue performance. Both low-cyclefatigue (LCF) and high-cycle fatigue (HCF) tests were performed under controlled strain amplitudes.Additional experiments addressed the transvers anisotropy of AM 316L by testing specimens built inthree orientations, 0°, 45° and 90° to the load direction. Fracture surfaces were characterized usingoptical and scanning electron microscopy to identify mechanisms of crack initiation and propagation. The experimental findings were used to calibrate a constitutive fatigue model incorporating nonlinearisotropic and kinematic hardening, Hill’s yield criterion, and a novel damage evolution law. Themodel successfully reproduced the anisotropic fatigue life of AM 316L specimens. The experimentalfindings highlighted the beneficial effects of combined HIP and machining, which significantlyenhanced HCF life due to improved surface quality and ductility, while LCF remained largelyunaffected. For 304L, the focus was on the phenomenon of strain-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) andthe resulting secondary hardening under cyclic loading. Fatigue tests were carried out at varying strainamplitudes and strain rates, while the evolution of martensite fraction was monitored using Hallsensors. A dedicated numerical model was developed to capture the viscoplastic response and thekinetics of martensite formation. The model reproduced key experimental trends, such as thedependence of secondary hardening on strain rate and amplitude and linked the transformationprocess to measurable changes in magnetic field strength.Overall, the results demonstrate that post-processing is critical for optimizing the fatigue resistanceof AM 316L, while the unique phase transformation in 304L governs its fatigue response. Thedeveloped numerical frameworks provide valuable predictive capability, supporting future design andlifetime assessment of stainless steel components in safety-critical environments such as nuclearpower plants.
