When planning and operating rail traffic, capacity calculations are important to manage the system effectively. Being able to quantify the capacity with a measurable indicator is helpful in decision-making and planning for improvements and future investments, such as upgrading and dimensioning new lines and stations.
This study aims to examine data automatically registered and collected by the signalling system, in the network of Sweden. By analysing this operationally collected signalling log data, we investigate whether it can serve as a feasible and efficient alternative input for capacity assessments of stations, when calulation capacity utilisation with a compression method.
The results from the case study, perfomed at Norrköping C with T22, shows that using signaling log data for capacity calculations is possbile. However, the the data reqires a lot of manual processing, is hard to access and sometimes inconsistent with missing values.
