Abstract [en]
Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD) is a promising approach to quantum se-cure communication as it uses the laws of physics to encrypt messages which is not done in classicalcommunication. In squeezed-state CV QKD quadrature squeezing can improve the security and theamount of information transmitted. However, the so-called secret key rate (SKR) that is achievableis strongly limited by loss and phase noise. In particular phase noise fluctuations arising from fluctu-ations of the signal and the local oscillator, as well as the polarisation drift in fibre that can reducehomodyne visibility and introduce excess noise that leads to a lowered SKR. This thesis develops atheoretical SKR model for a squeezed light CV QKD system that uses experimental characterisationdata to include the impact of realistic noise sources. A single mode squeezed light setup based onsecond harmonic generation, optical parametric amplification and balanced homodyne detection wascharacterised with and without additional fibre. With polarisation control the setup achieved 4.1 dBof squeezing and 9.8 dB of anti-squeezing without added fibre. With the insertion of fibre spoolsof 50 m the measurable squeezing dropped to 1.1 dB but could be recovered to 3.1 dB after manualrecalibration and polarisation stabilisation. The same exercise was repeated for longer fibres 100 m,and 10 km, where at 10 km the squeezing was no longer measureable. In this work I also characterised the phase noise for 0 m, 50 m, 100 m and 10 km using power spectraldensity analysis. In the stabilised case with no imbalance for 0 m, the measured phase variance wasreduced from 0.22 ± 0.29 rad to 0.029 ± 0.041 rad with the addition of polarisation control. Whenadding fibre to the system substantially larger fluctuations where shown with variances of 0.0±0.9 radfor 100 m and 0.1±0.91 rad for 10 km in the case that is stabilised in polarisation. Incorporating theselarger fluctuations into my SKR model shows that positive SKR is only achievable under sufficientlylow excess noise and high reconciliation efficiency, where polarisation noise is the dominant limitationin the current setup. Finally, I co-developed an actor critic reinforcement learning approach for polarisation control whichI tested in the lab as an alternative to the currently used parallel gradient descent. Simulation andinitial real system measurements demonstrate convergence and stabilisation, indicating that machinelearning based control may reduce calibration requirements in future CV QKD experiments.
