Abstract [en]
This thesis presents the development and optimization of a novel column-based upgrading process for biogenic pyrolysis oil using low-cost seashells as a sustainable adsorbent. The system replaces a conventional batch process with a three-phase packed-bed configuration, reducing processing losses, preventing solid residue formation, and enabling a more continuous refining pathway. Performance was evaluated using CHNS/O, NMR, GC-MS, and physical stability tests. Results showed strong deoxygenation, with oxygen content reduced from 45.8% to 1.3% (97% reduction). NMR and GC-MS confirmed the removal of oxygenated compounds while retaining valuable biogenic aliphatic. Adsorption behaviour followed a Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9861), indicating favorable adsorption on a heterogeneous surface with limited active site capacity. Physical analysis showed improved stability, reduced wax formation, and fuel-grade density comparable to conventional fuels. Recycling and regeneration studies demonstrated strong circular potential, with high recovery of oil and solvent and reusable seashell adsorbent. Overall, the process offers a low-cost, environmentally sustainable route for upgrading pyrolysis oil into stable, fuel-compatible products, while still retaining value-added chemical feedstocks.
