Value of collective ‘unruliness’ for increasing newsrooms’ discursive diversity?

Abstract [en]

Organized and moderated by Greta Gober (PI of the "Diversity Management as Innovation in Journalism" project) as part of ECREA’s online pre-conference From unruliness to collective action: Resisting norms on gender and sexuality in media.

This panel discussion brought together journalists, academics, and industry leaders to examine how collective action and strategic unruliness can push newsroom inclusion beyond numerical staff representation toward true discursive diversity. Drawing on insights from Swedish media and civil society, Jenny Rönngren (Syre / former Fempers editor) highlighted the need for newsrooms to consciously select diverse experts, avoid pigeonholing minority journalists into soft beats, and utilize niche alternative outlets to strengthen the leverage of journalists within mainstream media. Yasir Mirza (Financial Times) discussed shifting UK efforts toward building psychological safety and navigating the "poisoned chalice" where minority journalists are burdened with representing entire communities while balancing objectivity with personal values. Addressing institutional barriers in public broadcasting, Sagal Hussein Omar criticized organizations like Sveriges Radio for hiring for representation without structural support, leaving journalists trapped between expectations of bringing new perspectives and accusations of activism. Dr. David Dunkley Gyimah emphasized academic-industry allyship, the essential role of minority middle managers in preventing talent erosion, and the need for leaders oriented toward social innovation over shareholder returns.
